I loved the place, everything was very comfortable. The location was super central, short walk to a top class hotel/ restaurant, cathedral, and center of City. I ate in the attached restaurant nearby.

The staff was friendly and accommodating, offering me a room on the first floor to help with my pregnancy. Loved the well-stocked bar and the healthy breakfast options. The room had beautiful decor, and i really appreciated the the nespresso machine and fresh milk in the fridge.

On arrival I was told there was a mix up and I was moved to another hotel with a completely different atmosphere, which I had not booked. It was not high season and the staff at City Gate were far too casual about it. I booked well in advance and this was a hige disappointment, also that Booked.net finds this acceptable. Not trustworthy anymore.

We have a couple of rental properties in Exeter and visit the city several times per year.We have been to the City Gate to eat and drink quite a few times but never thought to stay until just recently. Now we won't even bother to consider anywhere else because ,pound for pound, this is the best value for money we have found and it is excellent in all respects. We would pay to sit in the garden alone!

An excellent small hotel very close to the city centre, the Cathedral Green is only a few minutes away with the Quayside slightly further. The establishment itself is an old Pub / Hotel with a long history. It has a set of bedrooms which have been thoroughly modernised. In fact I have stayed in several "4" star hotels which would not match up to the standards set here. Despite staying over a weekend and the hotel and its bar being quite busy, at no time did any noise reach my bedroom. I ate breakfasts and evening meals in the hotel, which were all very good, There is also a lounge area with good sofas and a large outside seating area. The staff were without exception very pleasant and helpful.
From my point of view this hotel is an excellent choice of a place to stay the only downside being the number of stairs to climb to the bedrooms

What they say is what you get. Attractive pub downstairs. Up to date comfortable hotel bedrooms upstairs. English breakfast was great.

The service was pretty poor, on arrival when we greeted the staff they didnt even acknowledge us! we then waited at the bar for about 20 minutes before even being acknowledged to be served a drink, with bar staff serving other customers who arrived after ourselves at the bar. Room was hot and stuffy, and the bathroom was smelly.

Thought the location of the hotel was good Staff very helpful and friendly. The hotel interior looks tired and jaded and needs revamping.
